My first impressions:
1. People that play Halo or COD are going to love the controls of GTA4. You can auto-aim and then hold the trigger and analog aim for a head shot. Or you can blow out a tire or a gas pump, etc.
2. I have NO idea what multiplayer is like because, as most of you know, playing a 360 backup copy on xbox live is not a very good idea. But I'm dying to try it. I think this will replace COD4 as the multiplayer of choice.
3. There is little to NO loading time when entering different areas. How they accomplished this I have no idea but the gameplay is smooth.
4. The level of detail in the city is insane. You could literally just sit and watch it all day and be amused.
5. Missions are hard as ****. It's almost a bit frustrating at times because of how much they subtract from the main storyline.
6. The storyline, thus far, is the best I've seen in any video game. Personally I'm not one for 'story modes'. I just don't have the time. But I'm going to make time for this one. It's as good as any movie I've seen this year. If you're interested in story mode then I'd recommend avoiding spoilers as there are some twists that you won't see coming.
7. You access pretty much everything through your cell phone just like real life. And just like real life this is in some ways cool and in other ways annoying as hell. Some times your 'friends' will be texting or blowing up your phone, for no good reason, while you're in the middle of a mission. TIP: Try no to avoid their calls/texts because as the game progresses you may need their help (weapons, shelter, $, health) and they won't help you if you haven't maintained a good relationship.
8. Stay out of the police 'wanted' radar as much as possible and if you have 3+ stars WATCH OUT for the ghetto bird. If it sees you you're basically screwed.
9. The so-called 'cover' system leaves you open sometimes. Hiding behind the wrong side of a car for example. Mildly annoying.
10. Driving vehicles in GTA4 is more fun than most dedicated driving games. You can do crazy stuff like e-brake turns in a car. And don't get me started with the helicopter. Landing, or crashing it, into the middle of a crowded city street has been one of the most fun things I've ever done in a video game.
