A Spread style attack from pitt
Introduction
I thought I would follow the trend of people writing up their offenses and posting it on here. The playbook I will be using for this write up is PITT (mainly because that is what I run).
Basically in all of my other schemes I have given out, they have been geared towards a tournament type setting. The major difference between a tournament and online play is gameplanning. Generally tourney games are shorter quarters and dont require a time controled offense. Online, you have to make your offense last for 4 five minute quarters. Plus you cannot run the same play over and over again with great success. This offense is souly geared towards online play. You will find much more plays then in my usual write-ups.
I also didnt want to make this write-up all scheme. I feel that 50% (if not more) of the game is stick work... so I am going to incorporate how I use stick work to enhance my schemes. I am going to group these by formations as well.
Why Pitt?
I chose to do pittsburghs offense for a few major reasons. One being that it is relatively unknown which makes it more of a "peek a boo" attack (lol I have to give some quotes from dodgeball!). Plus if you look at successful shotgun attacks they all incorporate at least 3 different kinds of formations (Balanced, overloaded and compressed). Pittsburgh contains all of those within the shotgun but also has a stellar set of under center formations.
SHOTGUN TRIPS
The Shotgun trips has by far became my favorite formation in this playbook. To relate better, it is the Trio of this playbook. The plays themselves are nice but adding in even the slightest of stick will BOOM this offense.
Deep Attack
The deep attack has earned my love! JK... but it is a very good play. You will have options all over the place!
Setup
1. Motion the RB to the left
2. Hot route the left inside reciever to a drag route
First off, this setup defends "a" gap heat plays with the RB doing a blue route over the middle. Plus it gives you a nice release route in the flats. Against man you can tear it up all day with the 2 levels of crossing routes. The Post and Streak route will murder zones as well as the blue route.
Rocket catching the Post
Rocket catching the post route is extremely effective. What you need to do is throw the ball with a pass lead to the right (bullet the pass). As soon as you do that click on and hold Strafe(LT/L2) and Catch (Y/Tri). Depending on your QB's accuracy you might need to take the stick up a little after clicking on. This animation is nearly impossible to stop unless they are litterally triple covering your receiver.
Slants Flat
This play is flat out money! The route combo of it is a zone buster but the routes all break open against man coverage as well.
Setup:
1. Hot route the right outside receiver to a streak or fade
2. Hot route the left inside receiver to a drag
3. Put the RB on a drag
4. Motion the left outside receiver and snap the ball once he reaches the OT.
On the left side of the field you have the zone buster.Your reads against zone are WR Drag, WR flat, RB flat. You will notice a lot of times the RB will be open because the WR in the flats occupies that defender. Against man you will rocket catch the slant on the right side of the field. There is always the streak to rocket, strafe or jetpack. In the redzone, this route will get you the one hander.
Rocket Catching the slant out
This is the easiest route to rocket catch of them all IMO. because of the depth of this route, bullet the pass with NO pass lead. Click on and hold Strafe(LT/L2) and Catch (Y/Tri). You will get a very difficult to stop rocket animation. Also if that receiver has a SPC weapon you can tap Y/Tri without clicking on the get the animation. I dont really do this though because I would rather just rocket it.
Getting the one hander with the slant out...
To get the one hander in the red zone, make sure you only call this play when you are about on the 5 yard line. Motion the receiver as normal and hike the ball. WHEN YOU THROW THE BALL PASS LEAD UP! Make sure that he has a good SPC rating and BOOM... you got a touchdown!
Slot option
Slot option is a good change up play that not many people would really think about running mainly because it looks like the routes take to long to setup. However this is more of a west coast quick passing play.
Setup
1. Drag the left inside receiver
one of the routes that sets this play off is actually the RB's route. This route beats man and zone consistently. The only difference is the point in which you throw the ball. Against zone you want to throw it right before he cuts upfield (that will be right before he goes into any basic zone). Against man you want to throw it before he heads up field. That will get him inside position on his man and allow him to get a catch. Another really good route is the slot option. If it is man he will almost always break over the middle or outside. Against zone he will run a curl route which is effective as well. Finally, you can rocket the "C" route on the right side.
Rocket catching the "C" route
This to is pretty simple to rocket catch. When you throw the ball pass lead DOWN. then Click on and hold Strafe(LT/L2) and Catch (Y/Tri). Note: some QB's may need to lead down and to the right depending on the accuracy rating.
SE Under
SE under is a great play to beat man and zone coverage as well as get your stick skills on. All of the posts and corners are just asking to be rocketed!
Setup:
1. Hot route the RB to a slant to the right
2. Hot route the Left outside receiver to a slant left
3. Motion the left outside reciever to the right and hike when he is at the OT.
Against man coverage you can take either the RB or WR' slant. Their crossing will bust man coverage wide open. Then you can also rocket the corner. Against zone you mainly want to rocket the post routes. I find the the corner will get picked off a lot due to purple zones.
Strafe catching the Corner route
To strafe catch the corner route, bullet the pass and click on quickly. Then hold Strafe and catch but point the LS in the direction of the route (North west). That should get the "bunny hop" animation for you. If you have a slower receiver running this route hold the speed burst as well or else he will not be in positon to make the catch.
Rocketing the post routes
What you need to do is throw the ball with a pass lead to the away from the route (bullet the pass). As soon as you do that click on and hold Strafe(LT/L2) and Catch (Y/Tri).
HB Screen

This is the final play I will show out of shotgun trips. This play is an excellent against man or zone. But more than anything it is used to look like deep attack pre-snap but then give our opponent crap by hitting him with a screen route.
Setup
1. Motion the RB to the left
2. Hot route the left WR to a drag.
The receivers other than the RB are pretty much decoys IMO. Use this play as a change up. There is one stick method I want to talk cover.
Getting the best running from the receiver…
When you are running with the RB after he gets the catch, brake out the stiff arm and hold it. Usually he will plow a DB right to the field or at least have a better chance at breaking away from the tackler. You can even hold speed burst if you would like…
Conclusion of Shotgun Trips
Hopefully you were able to get a lot out of this formation. The best part about it is that it is a spread set but also has an overload on one side. What you can look for your opponents to do is play an overloaded zone on the left side. If they do that you can have the right side wide open. Plus I hope you were able to see a practical approach for using rocket catching.
SHOTGUN 4WR
Shotgun 4WR is the balanced brother of the shotgun Trips. Many people look past this formation due to the fact that there is only 1 RB who can block. However, by creating a continuity in your offense using a series of motions and blocks this formation is HOT!
Steeler Cross
Steeler cross is found in most playbooks with a different name. This is my base play from this formation because of how well it attacks zone, man and blitz.
Setup
1. Motion the Right Inside receiver left
2. Hike the ball right after you send him in motion
What makes this play work against zone is the Dig and the drag route. The dig route forces the LB’s to drop back farther while the drag sneaks in underneath them. It also works visa versa. Against man, I like to RC the corner or the post route. The HB flat is pretty nice too. If they nano you then you will be able to tear it up with the RB in the flats.
Rocketing the corner
Rocket catching the corner route is a little different then doing post routes. You need to pass lead down and to the inside. So on this particular route you pass lead down and a little to the right. Click on, hold Catch and Strafe and BOOM!
Rocketing the post
The post route in this play is the exact same post route as in SG Trips Deep attack so you will use the same pass lead (to the right)
Slants Middle
This play is all about beating the man coverage. It is effective just running it like it is but I like to make an adjustment so I can rocket any of the slant routes.
Setup
1. Block the RB
2. Motion the receiver you want to RC to the other side
3. Streak the outside receiver on the other side
You can literally choose any of the slants to motion (4 Options!) which makes this play very re-usable. Basically whoever you motion you are going to rocket catch.
Rocket catching the Slant out
Again this is the easiest route to rocket. NO PASS LEAD. Click on hold strafe and catch and don’t move the Left stick. You can do that with any of the slants on this particular play…
Circle
This is flat out my money play in the red zone. I use it a way that a lot of other people wouldn’t though. The HB route is an all around coverage beater. The Cross route with the twist I put on it will get you the one handed grab.
Setup
1. Motion the left outside receiver to the right
2. Hike the ball right after he pass the right tackle
You will be able to tell what coverage it is by the way the DB reacts to the motion. If he strafes or doesn’t move he is in zone coverage. If he runs with the WR it is man coverage. Vs. Zone the HB will get inside position right as he cuts up so bullet the pass to him there. The cross route is kind of CG style lol. If you pass lead up on it and he has SPC it will trigger a somewhat strange 1 hander that is really difficult to stop. You also have the fade route on the left side that you can strafe/jetpack/rocket.
WARNING: DO NOT THROW THE CROSS ROUTE IF THERE IS A PURPLE ZONE BEING USED BECAUSE IT WILL GET PICKED AND MOST LIKELY GO FOR SIX!
PA Slot Options
This too is a very nice play that gets overlooked just because it has “PA” in the name. Don’t let that fool you because the routes in this play are hot.
Setup
1. Block the RB to cancel PA
2. Hot route the left outside receiver to a Streak
3. Motion the right inside receiver to the right
4. Snap the ball right after you send him into motion
Your best read for this play is the right receivers option. If it is man he will break outside on an out and get open rather quickly. Against zone he will turn around in front of the Hook zone defender and get open. You also have the left receiver option route. I would only throw that against zone though. Then the rocketing of the post and the strafe/jetpack or rocket from the streaked receiver on the left.
Post Flags
This is probably one of my favorite plays to put my stick to work. There are only two routes that I like in it so I make quite a few adjustments. Plus there is a motion I use to really set off one of the post-flag routes.
Setup
1. Hot route both inside receivers to out routes
2. Block the RB
3. Motion the outside receiver that is on the same hash as the ball to the other side.
4. Snap the ball after he passes the slot receiver.
Rocketing the Post-Flag
To rocket the post Flag, bullet the pass with a downward pass lead. This works the same on each side.
This setup allows us to use both post flag routes. If you don’t motion the receiver, we will run to the sideline and cut up. So if you motion him you don’t have to worry about the timing getting thrown off.
HB Screen
I think this is starting to become a tradition for me to end each formation with a screen lol… Anyways, if you want to know why I run this play look at Shotgun Trips HB Screen.
Setup
1. Motion the right inside receiver to the left
2. Hike the ball right after you send him in motion
This play is designed to look like all of the others in this formation. I usually run this to mesh it with Shotgun Trips.
