A Balanced Attack From the Pittsburgh Playbook

A Balanced Pittsburgh “O” Attack

Introduction
Pittsburgh is commonly referred to as an inferior ATL playbook. This is somewhat true with shotgun formations but the under center formations of PIT are only inferior to run n gun. The key to this offense is getting a balance between run/pass and under center/shotgun. I wanted to show you my most recent way of running this playbook with a balanced attack.

Audibles/Depth Chart
(audibles)
1. I form Normal-FB dive Strong
2. Shotgun Trips bunch-Twin Fades
3. I form Normal-HB Sweep
4. Shotgun 2RB-WR Post corner
5. Shotgun 2RB-X Screen

(Depth Chart)
HB1: Put your best back here, preferably over 90 speed
FB1: Put you next best back here or the quickest out of the backs that are left. For example, Heath Evans with the Pats is good, but Vickers with the browns isn’t. So I would out in the next quickest back.
WR1: You want (as usual) your feature receiver here. That doesn’t necessarily mean SPC but you want a tall and quick guy who can leap.
WR2: You want a tall guy here. Not necessarily quick but can leap up for it.
TE1: With my team (the Browns) K2 fits in really well. You want your most versatile TE here. One who could block, run and catch is great. Otherwise keep this player stock.

I Form Normal-Weak Flood
***BASE PLAY***
(Setup)1. Hot route the outside receivers to streaks
2. Hot route the backs to block in opposite directions
(Motions)
1. Before you setup, motion WR1 to read if it is man or zone

(Reads)

1. WR1 Streak (Rocket catch-down and right)
2. TE cross route against man
3. WR2 Streak (Rocket catch-Down and left)

(Final Thoughts)
The key to this play is the way the back block. With them both separating out you will get a solid protection against nanos. You also want to run straight back after the snap to ensure your QB’s safety. I come out in this play every down. However, I only run it when it looks like the defense isn’t defending it.

I Form Normal-FB Dive Strong
***Audible to this play when your opponent leaves his front open in the “A” gaps***

(Setup)-None

(Motions)
-Motion WR1 to check if man or zone.

(Reads)
You really don’t have any reads. Try to use the stiff arm or highlight stick when going through the hole and you might break a good run.

(Final Thoughts)
I don’t really use this play a lot but it is really good if your opponent anticipates your audibles to shotgun and comes out in nickel dime or quarter. You don’t want to overuse this run either.

I Form Normal-HB Sweep
***Audible to this play when your opponent pinches up his line to defend the FB Dive**
(Setup)-None

(Motions)-Motion WR1 to check if man or zone.

(Reads)
When running, you almost want to run straight at the sideline. Wait until the FB engages in a defender then start to take the run up field. The blocking of this run is pretty stellar.

(Final Thoughts)
This is a play that gives the run a threat every down. You want to use it when you opponents prepare for the FB dive and pinch their Line. I also find this is very helpful against fronts with eight or more men in the box because of how quickly it gets outside the tackles.

[color=#0000FF]Shotgun 2RB-WR Post corner [color]
***Audible to this play if your opponent is in man coverage***
(Setup)
1. Hot route both backs to block
2. Hot route the left receiver to a fade route.

(Motions)-If an A gap nano is read, motion one of the RB to the middle to protect it better.

(Reads)
1. WR1 Post corner route (Rocket catch-Pass lead down)
2. TE Post route (Rocket catch-Pass lead right)
3. WR2 Streak (Rocket catch-Pass lead down and to the left.)

(Final thoughts)
This is a great play to audible into. Your opponent has to commit 3 defenders on the post corner route to effectively shut it down. The other routes mesh well too. This is an excellent play to use against a team with below average secondary but is still effective against teams with good secondary’s.

Shotgun 2RB-X Screen
*** Audible to this play if your opponent is in Zone***

(Setup)
1. Hot route the TE to a drag
2. Block the left back
3. Streak the left receiver

(Motions)
-You can motion the left back over the middle to protect against the weak pocket blocking of the screen

(Reads)
1. WR1 Screen-Throw this if they are not jumping this route
2. TE1 Drag-Throw this if they audible to man
3. WR2 Streal-Throw this route if the screen and drag are covered.
4. Scramble to the left-This is only an option if you have a somewhat fast QB otherwise it is trash. If you do this you have to do it quickly or else you will lose yards in an instant/

(Final Thoughts)
This is straight up money against zone. It used to be better till everybody caught on that these were great zone beaters. Be careful though if they manually defender the route. REACT QUICKLY if they do.

Shotgun Trips Bunch-Twin Fades
***Audible to this play if your opponent doesn’t tip his hand at what he is defending***

(Setup)

1. Hot route the TE to a slant out
2. Hot route the RB to a slant out

(Motion)
-Motion the TE to the left.

(Reads)
1. Slants over the middle-The two man slant combo will get rubs against man and will overload zone.
2. The RB slant-This get open against some man coverage form some formation and gives you a read if your opponent doesn’t cover the flats
3. The outside streak-VS man rocket/zone SPC is (Rocket catch-pass lead down and left_
4. Inside streak-(Rocket catch-wait 15 yards, Pass lead down)

(Final Thoughts)
This play is really a good change up from I form and shotgun 2RB. I run this form a lot if my opponent plays a lot of man coverage and starts to manually defend post corner or X screen. Also use it in a hurry up offense after running I form and 2RB a lot and it will usually get you a good matchup.

Shotgun Trips Bunch-Curls attack
***Within 5 yards of the goal line***

(Setup)
1. Block the RB.

(Motion)
-Motion the TE to the left and hike it after he takes a few step

(Reads)

1. Slant curl the TE Runs is good for a 1 hander(pass lead up)
2. Slant curl by the Outside receiver for the 1 hander over the middle

(Final Thoughts)
This play is money if you have a TE that can SPC. Meshed with another play I show you can be nearly unstoppable. I only use this play if I am within 5 yards of the goal line. Look outside for the throw to the TE and inside for the throw the receiver. If really doesn’t matter what the coverage is.

Shotgun Trips Bunch-Flood Right
***Within 5 yards of the goal line***

(Setup)
1. Block the RB
2. Block the TE

(Motion)
-Motion the TE to the left and hike it after he takes a few step

(Reads)
1. The WR on the Shake route (Pass lead up)

(Final Thoughts)
This play is money! The shake route wont get you the 1 hander but it will beat literally any coverage. The only way that this route can be defended is if you manually defend the route which is also very difficult to do. It will shake man and bust through zone. They cant manually defend this if you run curls attack too.

Shotgun 4WR-Post Flags
***Red Zone play***

(Setup)
1. Block the RB
2. Streak the inside receivers

(Motion)
-None

(Reads)
1. The post flag routes (Pass lead up for the 1 hander or jumping animation)
2. The streaks in the middle (Pass lead up for the 1 hander or jumping animation)

(Final thoughts)
This is the HB option of this playbook. There are 4 routes that have the potential of getting the 1 hander. Make sure you know who can get it on your team though!

Final Thoughts
So hopefully you can see the real depth that the Pit playbook has. I know I will get some people saying “Why not use the I Form Twin TE Wing or Strong I jumbo formations?” It is simple; they do not off an effective passing threat. The key to this whole offense being able to pass under center while also running than audibling to shotgun to get a better matchup. If you have any questions feel free to ask!!!
