New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

WR spotlight has been in the game for a few years now and made little difference if any lol.....however, what if they created an effective feature where you could SPOTLIGHT BLITZERS? See someone stacking the a or b gap? Spotlight that blitzer and he is not coming free. It could apply a double team block to whoever you spotlight. So it would be useful against a really good DE too like Peppers or Freeney. This would be better than slide protection because it wouldnt force you to committ your whole o-line to one side to pick up one blitzer. Real life 0-line protection relies more on this kind of stuff than sliding the whole 0-line a certain way.

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

Thats actualyl a great idea.

pick your linemen....then spotlight a defender. He will do everything he can to pick up that defender.

this would make for an intersseting cat and mouse game. because if you guess wrong...well then that gap is now OPEN!!!!!!!!

I like that. It would easily lay the bad players out, lol. User the S down, fake him, come around the other edge. Boom.

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

Good idea... But how to implement it? If it's done well, it becomes a requirement for every Madden game to follow. Done wrong and it goes the way of QB Vision...

12 buttons (including R3 and L3), 2 sticks and a D-Pad.

1) Given the limitations of the controller, how do you add it in without losing anything that is already a necessity?

2) Will individual lineman adjustments be better than the Slide Protection feature?

If you can come up with a viable plan, I don't see why it can't be part of a future edition of Madden.

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

How about this, you could press in on one of the sticks as a button (L3 or R3) and hold it down. While the button is held down, buttons will pop up under various defenders. Hitting one of the buttons will spotlight that defender if he blitzes.

This would not do away with slide protect, just give people an alternative if someone is trying to stack 2 separate parts of the o-line. Example: you could slide your protection right, but double team a blitzer coming from the left. This wouldnt create an unbeatable offensive line either, just give people a better chance to pick up heat on 3rd and 15. Blown blocking assignments could still happen though too lol....

Not to dissuade you, because I think it's a good idea... BUT:

I should have asked how would this be better than Slide Protection AND blocking Hot Routes? Reason being, I haven't had any trouble picking up 3rd & 15 against the nastiest nanos...

Often, sliding protection is enough to buy a little time, but assigning a FB and HB to pick up blitzes gets the heat off assuming I pick the correct direction for the back to block (usually FB to strong side, HB to pickup weak side from the I). Simply mixing formations that are blitz killers with a blocking adjustment is enough to pick up ANY blitz even without slide protection.

So I guess my question is really... WHY would we need this idea?

Fact is, if someone rushes 6 vs 5, the QB is gonna get hit. So how would the backs be affected by the individual line calls? Or would they?

Not nit-picking (or maybe I am) for the sake of nit-picking... Just wanna refine the idea.

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

Not to mention how little the feature would be actually used, unless a guy is running the same blitz the hole game and you know hes doing it from the people he keeps switching to and setting it up it would be an automatic sack if say he put the linemen in a yellow zone while blitzing a Linebacker in his place making the line maybe step up trying to double the linemen and linebacker comes in :S?

But idk i think its a really good idea but would have to be revamped and looked at a lot to make work right like linemen not trying to double a guy who isent blitzing

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

Its true that HB power blocking works wonders in terms of picking up a blitz, but something like this would allow you to call various HB blocking assignments without having to flip your play or motion the HB.

Also, you hear on alot of nano write ups that "if they slide protect a guy will always come free from the other side". This is on blitzes with only 5 guys sometimes too.

Real offensive line protection schemes call for alot more tha just "sliding right' or "sliding left", and this would be a good way to begin to reflect that in Madden. It could even be used in run blocking too.

Agreed. I see the most value in that it would allow you to pick which defender you let come free while still blocking with 5. My backs could still run routes, and I could setup each linemen to pick up a particular defender, BUT:

What would happen if a rusher drops into coverage? Would the lineman stand there with his thumb up his ass? Or would he figure out that he should help somewhere else?

Alot of nano write-ups are written for folks that don't have time or smarts to figure it out on their own. As such, they don't focus on ways to slide protection effectively. There's the assumption that sliding protection is all you need, and it's not. In the Madden world, many of us would be on the bench on 3rd down for the same reason backs are on the bench... They can't pick up blitz protections.

Re: New Madden Idea: Protection Spotlight

Its good to have you back man, and you said it best. This would allow you to choose which defender gets through when you dont want to keep extra blockers in..as long as no one blows their blocking assignment lol.

As far as what a blocker would do if his man is in fact NOT blitzing, that would be predicated by his awareness and blocking ratings. If its a great pass protecting vet like Edgerin James, he would look for the next guy to block....but if its a rookie HB or any guy with low AWR or pass block ratings, he might sht the bed and allow a sack. Same things can easily apply to the o-line too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought this was already in the gm?

its called "Slide Protection"....I get what you're saying though, because slide protection, much like spotlight WR doesn't means ****
